5 Shoes for Fall: The Silhouettes Worth Owning This Season

Fall is the season where the shoe does the work. Summer lets you get away with anything because half your outfit is bare skin and a slide. Once the layers come back, the shoe is the thing that decides whether the whole look holds together.

Here are five silhouettes we would build a fall rotation around, with real pairs from our floor under each one. If you want the trend-level read instead of the category-level one, our trending low top sneakers for fall post covers what is actually moving.

1. The loafer

The loafer is the single best fall shoe because it solves the hardest problem of the season: looking put together without looking like you tried. It reads dressier than a sneaker and wears like one.

The Handball Spezial Loafer is the version we keep coming back to. adidas took the 1979 indoor handball shape, stripped the laces off it, and left the gum sole underneath. The Aurora Cocoa pair in KJ2533 is chocolate brown suede with tonal leather stripes, a full leather lining, and metallic foil Spezial branding along the sidewall. The thinner collar makes it noticeably lighter on foot than the standard lace-up Spezial.

If brown feels too safe, the leopard print in KJ2526 is the same construction with the volume turned up. Animal print behaves like a neutral in fall the way navy does the rest of the year.

Sizing: the Spezial line is the roomiest of the classic terrace models and runs true to size. The loafer keeps that relaxed forefoot. Full detail in our Spezial Loafer review and the women's loafer styling guide.

2. The Mary Jane

The ballet flat gets all the attention every fall, and the strap version is the one that actually survives a Portland October. A flat has nothing holding your foot down. A Mary Jane strap does, which is the difference between a shoe you wear to dinner and a shoe you wear all day.

The Samba Jane is the Samba with a hook-and-loop strap where the laces used to be. Same low T-toe profile, same gum-era proportions, no lacing. The Triple Black LA0968 is the quiet one, and monochrome is what makes it work with black denim and tonal knitwear rather than fighting them.

One honest note on fit. Because the strap replaces the laces, you cannot open the throat to buy yourself room the way you can on a lace-up. The Samba shape runs slightly long and narrow, so most people size down a half. Wider feet stay true. We go deeper in the Samba Jane guide and the Samba Jane styling post.

3. The clog, or the closest honest thing to one

The clog is having a real moment, and the honest version of this entry is the Adimule. Our own product page describes it as sitting closer to a casual clog than to a pool slide, and that is a fair read of the shape.

The Golden Beige JR3587 has a leather upper, a real cork sole with a suede footbed, and a gum rubber outsole. Closed toe, open heel. The cork and suede combination means it feels broken in immediately without going shapeless. That closed toe is the whole reason it works past September when a regular slide does not.

4. The house shoe you can answer the door in

This is the same shoe as above, which is the point. Fall is when the indoor and outdoor shoe finally merge, because you are home more and the walk to the car is short enough that a real shoe feels like overkill.

The test for a house shoe is whether you would answer the door in it. A cork-soled leather mule passes. A foam pool slide does not. Slip it on over wool socks and it stops being a summer shoe entirely.

5. The low profile sneaker in suede

Fall does not need a new sneaker so much as it needs a different material. Canvas and mesh look cold once the weather turns. Suede does not.

The Handball Spezial in Core Black is the workhorse. Black cow suede, white leather 3-Stripes, gold Spezial branding, gum sole, and the flat low-to-the-ground profile the model has had since 1979. DB3021 is the pair we point most people to when they want one sneaker to carry the season.

If you want color instead of black, the Gazelle Indoor is the other suede low-profile worth your time, and it comes in two colors that belong to this season. The red JI2063 in men's, and the ash green JS1396 in women's.

Maroon is the other move if you want a fall color that is not a statement. The Spezial in JR3848 does it in suede. For sizing, both the Spezial sizing guide and the Gazelle Indoor sizing guide will save you a return.

How to build the rotation

You do not need all five. Most people are covered by three: a suede low profile for daily wear, a loafer for anything with a dress code, and the mule for the house. Add the Mary Jane if your fall involves more dinners than commutes.

Browse the full lineup in Spezials, Gazelles, Sambas, and women's casual shoes. The men's side is mapped out in the men's Spezial buying guide.

Every pair gets authenticated in house before it leaves the building, and it ships same or next business day out of our warehouse in Portland, Oregon. Verified and shipped, every time.
