adidas Handball Spezial DB3021 vs IF7087: Black or Night Indigo?

adidas Handball Spezial DB3021 vs IF7087: Black or Night Indigo?

Two colorways of the adidas Handball Spezial get asked about more than any other pair on our floor: the black-and-white DB3021 and the Night Indigo IF7087. Same silhouette, same 1979 handball bones, same roomy terrace fit. The difference is in the suede tone, the leather trim, and how the gum sole ages. This is the head-to-head, with specs pulled straight off both pages.

The shoe both colorways are built on

The Handball Spezial was released in 1979 as an elite indoor handball shoe. That origin is still visible in the tooling. It sits lower to the ground than a Superstar, the T-toe overlay is carried over from the indoor-court build, and the tongue and collar are thinner than what you get on chunkier terrace models. Of the classic terrace trio, the Spezial has the roomiest fit, which is why it comes up so often for wider feet.

Both pairs are listed in US Men's sizing, both use a suede upper with leather detailing, both run on a gum rubber outsole, and both are brand new deadstock shipped in the original adidas box. Every pair is authenticated in house before it leaves our Portland, Oregon warehouse, then shipped same or next business day.

DB3021: Core Black, Cloud White, Gum

DB3021 is the makeup most people picture when they hear Handball Spezial. The upper is black cow suede. The 3-Stripes are white leather, and the sidewall carries gold Spezial branding. Underneath is a gum rubber outsole with the low, flat profile the model is known for.

The reason this one moves the way it does is the color logic. Black suede with white leather stripes reads as a neutral, so it sits under almost any pant color without a fight. The gum sole keeps it from going formal. It works with relaxed denim, olive cargos, or straight-leg trousers, and it holds the vintage terrace look without tipping dressy.

IF7087: Night Indigo, Cream White, darker gum

IF7087 takes the same build into deep Night Indigo suede with cream leather stripes. The serrated 3-Stripes and heel tab use smooth leather against the soft suede panels, there is contrast stitching through the upper, and the Spezial lettering is gold. The lining is synthetic. The gum outsole on this pair is a darker tone, which keeps the whole palette grounded rather than letting the sole jump out.

Cream instead of bright white is the detail that makes this colorway easy. It warms the navy and gives the shoe a worn-in look from the first wear. Faded denim, olive fatigue pants, and grey sweats all land naturally with it.

Do they run true to size?

Both are generally true to size, and both give you the roomiest fit among the classic terrace models. If you wear a 10 in a Samba and the Samba feels tight across the forefoot, take your 10 in either Spezial and expect noticeably more room through that same area. Wide feet do well here for the same reason.

The thinner tongue and collar mean the break-in is short. The suede gives early, and the gum outsole stays flexible from the first day. We go deeper on the model's fit in the Handball Spezial sizing guide, and if you are cross-shopping the Stadt, the Stadt vs Handball Spezial comparison covers that split.

Which one ages better?

This is where the two genuinely separate. Darker gum wears in more cleanly over time than lighter gum, so IF7087 hides the scuffing and dirt pickup that a light gum sole starts showing after a season of real wear. DB3021 has the brighter gum and the white leather stripes, so it rewards a little more upkeep.

Black suede is the more forgiving upper of the two. Navy suede shows dust more readily against the cream trim. Neither is difficult to keep up with if you brush the suede dry and stay off the soap. Our full method is in how to clean adidas Handball Spezials.

Which should you buy?

Buy DB3021 if you want the Spezial to function as a neutral. Black suede and white leather is the most flexible version of this shoe, and the gold sidewall branding gives it enough detail that it never reads plain. It is the pair to pick when you want one shoe that goes with everything already in the closet.

Buy IF7087 if you already own something black and want color that still behaves. Navy with cream trim and darker gum is a softer, warmer look, it pairs with denim in a way black does not, and the darker sole means less maintenance ahead of you.

If you want the long version on either colorway on its own, we have dedicated pages: the black DB3021 breakdown and the Night Indigo write-up. The rest of the model sits in the Handball Spezial collection, where live pricing and available sizes are always current.

Whichever way you go, it ships Verified & Shipped from Portland, Oregon, authenticated by hand before it goes out.
