adidas Handball Spezial Loafer Sizing: Do They Run True to Size?
Short answer: yes, true to size. The longer answer matters more here than it does on a lace-up, because a loafer gives you no second chance to adjust the fit after it arrives.
Do the Spezial Loafers run true to size?
Order your normal size. The Handball Spezial is the roomiest fit of adidas's classic terrace models, and the loafer keeps that relaxed forefoot. Every pair we carry lists true to size, and the wider footbed makes the line a strong option for wide feet compared to a Samba.
If you already own a lace-up Handball Spezial, take the same number. The loafer is built on the same shape.
Why no laces changes the math
This is the part most sizing guides skip, and it is the whole reason to read one for a loafer specifically.
On a lace-up, your size is a starting point. If the shoe runs slightly roomy you tighten the laces and pull the collar in. If it runs snug you loosen them and buy yourself a few millimeters of volume. The lacing is an adjustment range, and it hides a lot of sizing error.
A loafer has no adjustment range. The slip-on strap sets the volume at the factory. Whatever the shoe is when it comes out of the box is what it will be in a year, minus a small amount of give as the suede and leather relax. So the half size you might have fudged on a lace-up Spezial is a half size you actually have to get right here.
Practical version: if you are between sizes, go down rather than up. A loafer that is slightly snug will relax into your foot. A loafer that is slightly loose will slip at the heel forever.
What about wide feet?
The Spezial line is the friendliest of the terrace models for wide feet, and the loafer inherits that. Stay true to size.
The thing to watch is not width but instep height. The loafer opening is fixed, so a high instep is what makes these hard to get on, not a wide forefoot. If you have historically struggled to get into slip-ons, that is the constraint to think about, and it is not something a half size up will solve cleanly.
What about narrow feet?
This is the group that should be most careful. The Spezial is a roomy shoe by design and there are no laces to cinch it down. If you have a narrow foot and you normally lace your sneakers tight, the loafer may never feel locked in. A thicker sock helps. So does going down a half size if you are on the line.
Converting from men's sizing

The colorways, and how each one wears
Three worth knowing. The Aurora Cocoa in KJ2533 is chocolate brown suede with tonal leather stripes, a full leather lining, and metallic foil Spezial branding. It is the one that reads most like an actual loafer rather than a sneaker.
The leopard in KJ2526 is a pony hair-style printed leather in magic beige and dark brown, with black leather Three Stripes and a leather sockliner. Same construction, more presence.
The Wonder White in KJ0640 is off-white suede with leather accents on the serrated 3-Stripes and a leather lining. It is the one for outfits where a sneaker is too casual and a dress loafer is too formal.
All three sit on the same flat gum rubber outsole and share the 1979 Handball Spezial shape underneath, so the sizing advice above applies equally to each.
