When did the adidas Harden Vol. 1 retro release?

The Harden Vol. 1 'Pioneer' retro released in the US on October 15, 2026. It surfaced first in China before the US date, and Jalen Williams appeared in the promo. The release lands as Harden heads toward his 18th NBA season, with his adidas deal running through 2028.

What is the 'Pioneer' colorway?

The official colorway is Core Black, Cloud White and Better Scarlet. The name honors Artesia High School, home of the Pioneers, where Harden won back-to-back California state titles.

On the shoe, the color blocking splits front to back. A white leather toe and vamp sit over a white midsole up front. Behind that, soft black fabric runs over a black midsole, and red hits on the tongue and heel branding tie it together.

What changed from the 2016 original?

adidas calls this release a "Restomod": the outside stays true to the original layout, and the tech underneath gets updated. The big change is cushioning. Per adidas' announcement, Hyperboost replaces the original Boost. That makes the Harden Vol. 1 the second adidas basketball shoe with Hyperboost, after the Anthony Edwards 3.

If you remember the 2016 pair, the shape and color blocking will look familiar. The difference is the Hyperboost cushioning underneath.

A quick look back at the 2016 Harden Vol. 1

adidas unveiled the Harden Vol. 1 on October 22, 2016, and the Pioneer colorway first released on December 3, 2016. The original paired a Primeknit upper with a leather toe wrap and full-length Boost, with an asymmetrical design built to look different from the start.

There's a local angle too. The Vol. 1 came out of adidas Basketball's design team in Portland, with Brian Foresta, adidas' VP of Basketball Design, on the team. The shoe that started the line was drawn up in the same city we ship from. For the full run from the Vol. 1 to today, read our guide to the James Harden signature line.

Does the Harden Vol. 1 retro run true to size?

adidas' product page for LC5090 says: "True to size. We recommend ordering your usual size." That's the official guidance, so start with your normal sneaker size. As general guidance across basketball shoes, if you have wide feet, try a pair on with the socks you play in before you commit.
