The adidas Superstar has been on feet since 1969, and more than fifty years later the shell-toe silhouette is still one of the most recognizable sneakers ever made. The catch with a shoe this iconic is that the fit question never goes away: every new buyer wants to know whether to order their normal size, round up, or round down. This guide walks through how the Superstar actually fits so you can order once and get it right.
Everything below is written around the version we carry, the adidas Originals Superstar II, plus the skate-leaning Superstar ADV. The styles named here are examples rather than the full picture, so browse the Superstars collection for the rest of the range.
Do adidas Superstars run true to size?
For most people, yes. The Superstar is a true-to-size shoe, and ordering your normal adidas size is the right default for a standard-width foot. The nuance is that the leather upper sits a touch long out of the box while the last underneath is narrow, so if you are between sizes or have a narrower foot, the half size down often gives a cleaner, more locked-in fit. If you wear thicker socks or have a higher-volume foot, stay at your true size.
Because the Superstar comes in full and half sizes across the range, you usually do not have to compromise. Both the men's Black/White Superstar II and the women's pairs like the White/Black Superstar II are made in half sizes, so you can act on the advice below rather than round to the nearest whole.
Should you size up or down?
Size down a half if you have a slim or low-volume foot, plan to wear thin socks, or simply like a snug heritage fit. Stay true to size for everyday wear with regular socks. Do not size up. The leather gives a little across the width but almost nothing in length, so a half size up adds room at the toe you do not need and lets your heel move around instead. If you are trying to make space for a thick sock or an orthotic, the honest answer is that this last has limited room for either, and extra length will not create it. For a deeper breakdown of this exact decision, see our companion piece, Superstar II Size Guide: Should You Size Up or Down?
How does the shell toe affect the fit?
The molded rubber shell toe is the Superstar's signature, and it changes how the front of the shoe feels. The toe box holds its shape rather than flexing with your foot, so the length you order is the length you live with — the shell will not stretch out the way a soft canvas toe might. That is exactly why the half-size-down trick works for narrow feet: you are tightening the fit without fighting a toe box that wants to give. Leather across the midfoot and collar, on the other hand, relaxes and molds over the first week or two of wear.
Do Superstars work for wide feet?
Less easily than the shoe's reputation suggests. The Superstar sits on a narrow last, and the vamp pulls in over the rigid shell toe, so it is not the forgiving option next to a genuinely wide terrace model like the Handball Spezial. If your feet are wide, order your true size rather than going down, and let the leather break in across the forefoot; if you get any heel slip at true to size, a heel grip solves it far more reliably than a size change. The one alternative worth knowing is that if a locked-in heel matters more to you than forefoot room, half a size down is the better trade. What does not work is sizing up: extra length buys you no width where the shell toe pinches. The all-leather builds, including the men's Triple Black Superstar II, soften noticeably across the midfoot once they conform to your foot, though the shell cap itself never gives. If you have compared adidas terrace fits before, our Handball Spezial sizing guide is a useful reference point for how much wider those run.
How do men's and women's Superstar sizing compare?
adidas lists men's and women's Superstars on different size scales, and the standard adidas conversion is a one-size difference: a women's 8 lines up with a men's 7. Our own original hang tag shows a men's 8½ labelled as a women's 9½, which is the same offset. If you find a colorway you love on the opposite gender's listing, convert before you order. For example, a women's pair such as the Brown Leopard Superstar II in a women's 8 is a men's 7. The shoe itself is unisex in shape; only the labeled size differs.
Which Superstar are you actually buying?
Fit also depends a little on the material. The classic smooth-leather pairs in Black/White and White/Black are the reference fit most sizing advice is based on. Premium textures like pony-hair and animal-print uppers wear the same length but feel a touch more structured at first. And the skate-tuned Superstar ADV uses a slightly reinforced build for board feel, so true-to-size is the right call there. Whatever finish you choose, the length guidance above holds.
