adidas Campus 00s in grey suede, an example of grey sneakers that hide wear

Grey Sneakers: The Third Neutral

Grey is the most underrated sneaker color, and the argument for it is practical: white shows every mark, black shows dust and scuffs, and grey hides both. It's the only neutral that doesn't punish you for wearing it.

Everything grey we can ship is in the Grey Shoes collection.

Light grey or dark grey?

Light and mid greys read casual and pair naturally with denim and cream. Charcoal and darker greys behave closer to black — they'll go with tailoring and darker clothing without the harshness of a true black shoe.

If you're buying one grey pair, go mid. It covers the widest range and it's the shade that actually delivers on the low-maintenance promise; very light greys start showing dirt almost as fast as white.

The grey pairs worth knowing

The Grey Campus 00s (JR2463) is the one I'd point most people to — suede upper, chunky sole, and grey suede is the single most forgiving material combination in sneakers. The Light Grey Campus 00s (HQ8707) is the same shoe a few shades up.

For something dressier, the Grey Samba OG in 'Taupe Oxide Gold' (IH9160) leans warm rather than cool, which makes it easier with tan and brown than a standard cool grey.

On the sportier end, the Grey/Black Daily 3.0 (FW3270) and the Grey VL Court 3.0 (JS0504) are simple court shapes, and the Black/Grey Ultradream DNA (JS0316) is the cushioned runner of the group.

The Grey Gazelle (BB5480) is the classic if you want the original silhouette in suede.

Is it grey or gray?

Both are correct — "grey" is the British spelling and "gray" is American, but in sneakers the British spelling won. adidas, New Balance and most others label colorways "grey," so that's what you'll see on the box and on our listings.

Caring for grey suede

Grey suede is forgiving about dirt but unforgiving about water — spots show on grey more than on brown or black because the contrast is higher.

Let anything wet or muddy dry completely, then brush it out with a suede brush. Wiping wet suede drives the dirt into the nap and leaves a permanent dark patch. A water-repellent spray before the first wear is worth the ten minutes, especially if you're in the Pacific Northwest like we are.
