How to Spot Fake adidas Superstars
The Superstar's shell toe is one of the most recognizable shapes in sneakers — and one of the most copied. Because the design is so detail-heavy, fakes tend to reveal themselves quickly if you know where to look. Here's a legit-check guide, plus the reassurance of buying from an authenticated source.
Start with the shell toe
The rubber shell toe is the Superstar's signature, and it's where many counterfeits fall short. On a genuine pair the molded ribbing is evenly spaced and cleanly defined, the toe shape is symmetrical between both shoes, and the rubber is bonded smoothly to the leather with no gaps or excess glue. Fakes often have uneven ribbing, a slightly wrong toe profile, or a shell that looks flattened or overly bulbous.
Count and check the 3-Stripes
The Superstar wears three rows of perforated 3-Stripes on each side. They should be evenly perforated, cleanly stitched, and symmetrical across both shoes. Check that the perforations are crisp and consistent — sloppy, uneven, or partially punched holes are a common counterfeit giveaway.
Inspect the heel tab and branding
The gold foil Superstar branding on the heel tab and the Trefoil on the tongue should be sharp, correctly spaced, and properly aligned. Look closely at the font: counterfeits often get letter spacing or proportions subtly wrong, or use foil that looks dull or smudged. The tongue label should also carry an article number that matches the box.
Match the labels and materials
As with any adidas pair, the box article number should match the tongue tag, along with size and country details. The leather upper should feel genuine and substantial, the stitching tight and even, and there should be no overpowering glue smell. A too-stiff, plasticky upper is a warning sign.
Should you size up or down?
Fit is a separate question from authenticity, and the Superstar has its own quirks. We cover them fully in our Superstar II size guide — worth a read before you commit to a size.

Counterfeit construction changes over time, so treat this as general guidance rather than a guarantee — when in doubt, buy from a seller that authenticates for you.
