Begin with the tongue tag and box label. The article number on the box should match the tongue, along with size, colorway name, and factory/country details. Check the serrated 3-Stripes and side branding
Like the Samba, the Handball Spezial uses serrated 3-Stripes. They should be evenly stitched and symmetrical across both shoes. The "Spezial" branding along the side and on the tongue should be crisp and correctly placed, often in gold foil on suede pairs. Watch for stripes that are uneven, the wrong shape, or applied with visible glue, and for branding fonts that look slightly off.
Feel the suede or leather
Authentic Spezials come in genuine suede (on most pairs) or smooth leather (on releases like the black-and-white version). The material should feel soft and natural, not stiff and synthetic, and shouldn't reek of glue. The Spezial is known for a thinner tongue and collar than a Gazelle, fakes sometimes get the padding and proportions wrong, making the shoe feel bulkier or stiffer than it should.
Inspect the gum sole and shape
The low gum rubber outsole should be an even honey tone and bonded cleanly to the upper, with no glue squeezing out along the seam. The Spezial sits flat and close to the ground, with a low profile but a generous, accommodating shape through the forefoot. A sole that looks too thick, a silhouette that sits too high, or sloppy bonding are all reasons to look closer.
How should they fit?
