adidas VL Court: the 2.0, the 3.0, and the Bold, Explained
The VL Court is one of those adidas shoes people buy without checking which version they are getting. Three of them turn up in regular rotation, the 2.0, the 3.0, and the Bold, and they are built differently enough that the choice matters once the box is open. Here is what separates them, how they fit, and who each one suits.
What the adidas VL Court actually is
The VL Court lives in adidas's casual court and skate lane rather than the performance running lineup. The shape borrows from the brand's older indoor and court models, including the T-toe overlay you already know from the Samba and the Handball Spezial, then simplifies everything around it. Flat sole, clean paneling, lace closure, 3-Stripes on the side. It is the everyday adidas silhouette, meant to be worn hard rather than saved for good. You will find the whole family inside our Casual Shoes and adidas collections.
VL Court 2.0: suede and a gum sole
The 2.0 is the softest of the three. The Preloved Green pair (JH5077) uses suede through the forefoot, quarter, and heel, with ivory 3-Stripes, gold metallic branding along the sidewall, and a gum rubber outsole. A textile lining and padded collar make it comfortable from the first wear, and the gum sole gives it the warmer, slightly vintage look people usually want out of a suede adidas shoe. If suede and gum is the combination you are after, start here.
VL Court 3.0: the everyday one
The 3.0 is the current version and the one you will see most often. It comes in two different upper builds, and they wear differently. The Navy pair (ID6275) uses a coated synthetic leather upper with white 3-Stripes and a gum outsole, with lightweight cushioning underfoot and a vulcanized rubber sole that keeps the profile low and flexible. The Grey Three pair (ID6276) uses a smooth leather upper over a cushioned midsole and the same vulcanized outsole, which makes it the more structured of the two and the easier one to wipe down after a wet Portland week.
VL Court Bold: the platform version
The Bold keeps the court shape and lifts the whole build onto a raised platform rubber sole, so it carries more presence underfoot while the lines above stay simple. The Powder Teal, Shock Pink and Powder Yellow pair (JQ4482) combines suede and synthetic materials with serrated 3-Stripes branding, and the blue and pink pair (JQ1712) runs the same platform build with layered overlays. Both lean into the early 2000s skate and court look the silhouette pulls from.
Do adidas VL Court shoes run true to size?
Yes, across all three. adidas lists the 3.0 as true to size with a standard width feel, and the low profile shape gives you a little more room through the forefoot than a Samba does. The 2.0 fits true to size with the same standard width character. The Bold runs true to size as well, with a slightly wider base from the platform and a normal adidas court fit through the forefoot and heel. If you are between sizes, most people stay with their usual adidas size. Our adidas size chart guide walks through how adidas numbering compares to other brands.
VL Court or Samba?
These two sit in the same visual lane, so the question comes up constantly. The Samba is the narrower, more structured shoe with a sharper terrace fit. The VL Court 3.0 feels more relaxed on foot and stands a little chunkier through the sole, which suits people who want the low profile adidas look with a softer break in period. The 2.0 goes further in that direction thanks to the suede upper. For a fuller picture of where the terrace models land, our Samba vs Gazelle vs Spezial breakdown compares all three side by side.
Buying the VL Court for kids
The kids' range is where the VL Court earns its keep. The Cloud White and Pure Ruby pair (KI3119) pairs a textile and synthetic upper with a non marking rubber outsole, which matters for gym floors. The Bright Yellow, Bold Blue and Bold Green pair (KI3123) is the same build with far more color. There is also a kids' VL Court 3.0 that mixes leather and synthetic in the upper with a textile lining, and comes with a hook and loop strap on the smaller sizes for children who are still learning laces. All of them live in our Kids collection.
Kids' sizing is its own puzzle, especially around the jump from K sizes to Y sizes. Our kids' shoe size conversion guide covers the measuring part, and our school shoes buying guide covers what actually survives a school year.
How to wear them
The navy 3.0 works with loose denim, nylon pants, or straight leg workwear, and the darker upper takes heavy rotation without looking overly sporty. The grey leather pair suits straight leg denim, chinos, or relaxed black trousers. The green suede 2.0 goes naturally with washed denim, olive fatigues, and cream heavyweight basics. The Bold is happiest with relaxed denim or wide leg joggers, where the color and the platform carry the outfit on their own.
