School Shoes: A Buying Guide That Works All Year
Most school shoe advice is written for the last week of August and aimed at parents of seven-year-olds. But shoes wear out in January, students buy their own from about high school on, and staff are in the building the same 180 days everyone else is.
This is the version that isn't tied to a season or an age. Start with the Kids collection, the Campus collection for older students, or Black Shoes if a dress code is the constraint.
What makes a school shoe last
Three things, in the order they usually fail.
The outsole. Rubber, ideally with real tread. Foam outsoles wear smooth in months and turn into a slip hazard on a wet hallway.
The upper. Suede and leather scuff; canvas and mesh tear. Scuffing is cosmetic and brushes out. A tear ends the shoe.
The toe. Where shoes actually die — dragged on pavement, kicked into things. A rubber toe cap or shell toe buys months.
This holds at every age. The difference is that a nine-year-old destroys a toe box in weeks and a college student wears through an outsole over two semesters.
Laces, velcro, or slip-on?
Match this to the person, not their age. If tying is still a struggle, velcro or elastic laces mean the shoe is on properly all day rather than loose or dragging.
Check whether PE requires a secured closure — plenty of programs won't allow slip-ons on a gym floor, which makes them a poor choice for the only pair.
Kids and grade school
Below about a size 4Y the sizing is unisex and the only real difference is colorway. The VL Court Bold in Teal/Pink (JQ4482) and Blue/Pink (JQ1712) have the deepest size runs we carry. The White & Blue VL Court (JH8721) is the neutral take.
For something dressier, the Liberty Handball Spezial (JQ2010) is suede with a gum sole.
High school and college
Once someone's carrying a bag between buildings all day, the calculation shifts from durability to mileage. You want more midsole than a flat heritage shoe gives you.
The Campus 00s is the best fit — the roomiest of the adidas heritage models, with a chunkier sole and a suede upper that handles weather. The Grey Campus 00s (JR2463) is the most versatile and the Brown Campus 00s (JH7605) is the warmer neutral.
If the day is mostly walking, the White Adizero Evo SL (JH6206) is lighter and has the deepest run of anything here.
Teachers and staff
Six or seven hours upright on tile over concrete is a standing job, and it needs support more than softness — soft foam compresses and stops rebounding by the afternoon.
The Black Ultradream DNA (JS0315) is built for sustained wear, and the Campus 00s works where a running shoe would look out of place. Rotate two pairs if you can — midsole foam needs about a day to decompress.
What size are grade school shoes?
Sizes marked K are little kid. Sizes marked Y are grade school — often labelled GS — and use the same numbering as US men's. A 6Y is roughly a men's 6 and about a women's 7.5, which is why adults with smaller feet often shop grade school sizes.
Leave about a thumb's width at the toe. More than that and the foot slides, which causes blisters and wears the heel lining early.
Do school shoes have to be black?
Only if the dress code says so, and most are looser than people assume — many allow a black upper with a white sole or small logo. Codes apply to staff as often as students. The Black Shoes collection is filtered to what we can actually ship.
