Vans Old Skool black sneakers

Brand Spotlight: Vans

Brand Spotlight: Vans

Few sneaker brands are as instantly recognizable — or as genuinely rooted in a subculture — as Vans. Born from Southern California skate culture, it's stayed relevant for nearly six decades by keeping its classics almost exactly the same. Here's the story and the styles we stock.

From a Anaheim storefront to a skate institution

Vans started in 1966 as the Van Doren Rubber Company in Anaheim, California, making shoes and selling them straight to customers out of its own shop. The thick, grippy waffle outsole and rugged canvas uppers made the shoes a natural fit for skateboarding, and by the 1970s Vans was the skate shoe. That heritage still defines the brand: simple, durable, and built to be beaten up.

The classics, and what makes each one different

Vans is really a small family of timeless silhouettes. The Authentic is the original — a low, lace-up canvas shoe that started it all, and the one we carry in everything from black to a patchwork floral. The Old Skool added the famous side stripe and a suede toe for durability. The Sk8-Hi takes that same DNA up to a padded high-top, and the Slip-On strips it all back to a laceless, throw-them-on classic. Browse the full range in our Vans collection.

Do Vans run true to size?

Vans generally run true to size in length, though the classic canvas models have a flat, slightly roomy fit and a flat insole. If you're between sizes or like a snugger feel, sizing down a half can work; if you wear thick socks or have a wider foot, stay true. The canvas softens and molds with wear, so they tend to feel better the more you wear them.

Why Vans still works

The appeal is simplicity. A pair of black Authentics or Old Skools goes with everything, costs little to live in, and never looks dated. They're the definition of a wardrobe staple — as at home with jeans and a tee as they are on a board. That low-maintenance, all-purpose character is why they remain a first sneaker for so many people.
