adidas Bambi Handball Spezial Loafer (KK0920): The Deer Print Slip-On, Explained

adidas Bambi Handball Spezial Loafer (KK0920): The Deer Print Slip-On, Explained

The Handball Spezial has spent the last few years as one of the most reliable terrace shoes going, almost always in suede, almost always with laces. The KK0920 takes the same low-profile shape somewhere else entirely. It drops the laces for a slip-on loafer construction and wraps the upper in a brown deer print finished with off-white detailing and a small hit of metallic gold.

Shoppers have been calling it the Bambi Spezial. adidas calls the pattern a deer print, and the name traveled on its own from there. Since the question comes up constantly, it is worth saying plainly that this is a deer print treatment and the shoe carries no Disney licensing attached to it.

What the Handball Spezial Loafer actually is

The Handball Spezial started in 1979 as an indoor handball shoe, which is where the flat profile and the grippy, low-slung outsole come from. The loafer keeps that silhouette and that Spezial outsole, then changes the construction. The lace closure comes off, the opening becomes a slip-on, and what is left reads much closer to a loafer than to a court shoe.

On the KK0920 specifically, adidas builds the upper from leather and other materials, with soft leather 3-Stripes laid over the deer print and a Spezial logo on the tongue. The lining is textile and other materials. Everything that made the lace-up version comfortable stays in place, including the thin tongue and collar that keep the shoe from feeling bulky around the ankle.

The KK0920 colorway: deer print with off white and gold metallic

adidas lists the finish as off white with gold metallic over the brown deer-print base. In person the gold is restrained, showing up as detailing rather than as a statement, and the off white does most of the work breaking up the pattern. The result sits closer to a neutral than the phrase "deer print" suggests, which is what makes it wearable with more of a wardrobe than a patterned shoe usually is.

If you are comparing it against the rest of the lineup, the Handball Spezial colorways guide covers how the standard suede releases stack up, and the women's loafer overview walks through the loafer colorways side by side.

Do they run true to size?

adidas lists the KK0920 as a regular fit and true to size, so order your usual size. That is a real difference from the lace-up Handball Spezial, which a lot of people size down in, so do not carry your Spezial sizing habit over to this pair without thinking about it.

The slip-on construction is the reason. With no laces to cinch, the fit depends on the opening holding your foot in place, and adidas tuned the last accordingly. If you have wide feet, the Spezial platform is already the roomier one in the adidas terrace family, since it uses a wider footbed than the Samba does. Our Handball Spezial Loafer sizing guide goes deeper, and the loafer review covers how they settle in after a few wears.

Bambi loafer or Bambi Samba?

adidas put the same deer print on the Samba OG as the KJ7447, so this is a genuine decision for a lot of people. The two shoes feel different on foot. The Samba is narrower, stiffer, and more structured, with a T-toe, a thin sole, and a long football-inspired tongue, and most people size down a half size in it. The Spezial loafer is wider through the footbed, softer, and true to size.

The colorways differ too. The Samba version runs Brown Desert with Warm Vanilla and Wonder Mauve, which brings a soft pink into the palette, while the loafer stays with off white and gold. We broke the Samba down in full in the Bambi Samba KJ7447 guide.

How to style the deer print

The brown and off-white base behaves like a neutral, so the pattern reads as texture from a few feet away. Straight-leg denim works, relaxed trousers work, and darker cargos work particularly well because the dark fabric lets the print carry the detail without competing with it. Because it is a loafer, it also handles the slightly dressed-up version of all three in a way the lace-up Spezial does not quite manage.

Cropped and straight hems are the ones to reach for. A slip-on with a low collar wants the shoe visible, and a long break over the opening hides the part of the shoe you bought it for.

Checking a pair is real

Deer print is a pattern, and patterns are where replicas tend to fall apart, usually in the print registration and in the quality of the leather 3-Stripes laid over it. If you are buying a pair anywhere other than from us, read how to spot fake adidas Handball Spezials first and check the tongue label and the outsole detailing carefully.
