Do adidas Sambas run true to size?
Not quite. The Samba OG runs slightly long and narrow, so if you have a standard or narrow foot, go down half a size. That half size cleans up the length. The upper is a low-cut leather build with a suede T-toe overlay and a thin gum rubber sole, so there's very little internal volume compared to a chunkier trainer — it is the narrowest and most structured of the classic terrace models. The shoe may feel snug out of the box, and the leather and suede do give a little as they break in.
The size-down move you'll read about online is the right one, and testing three sizes back to back on one foot confirmed it. At a half size up the heel slips and the toe sits empty, and lacing does not fix it. Nobody should be sizing up in a Samba. If you're on the line between two calls, sock thickness is the lever — plan for a thicker sock and the larger size makes sense, plan for thin socks and the half down wins.
What if I have wide feet?
This is where the rule flips. The Samba is a narrow shoe by design, so if you have wide feet, stay true to size — sizing down costs you width you actually need. The flat, hard sole and minimal padding mean a too-tight Samba won't "stretch to fit" the way a knit sneaker might. The leather does give across the width with break-in, but it never gives in length. That's the honest trade-off: the length says size down, the narrow build says don't if you're wide.

The Samba XLG puts the Samba upper on a taller EVA platform with a slightly bulkier build — take your true size, because the platform changes how the shoe feels underfoot rather than how long it runs. There's also the Samba Jane, a women's-specific take: half a size down for most feet, true to size if you're wide, and worth thinking about carefully because there are no laces, so the size you pick is the fit you get.
How to lock in your size
Start with your true adidas size, then go down a half unless your feet are wide. Wide feet stay true to size. Nobody sizes up. If you're between sizes, sock thickness decides it.
