The adidas Stadt: Sizing, Styling, and How It Compares to the Samba
The Stadt is one of the quieter shoes in the adidas Originals lineup, and it is worth knowing about if you like the low, flat terrace shape but already own a Samba. Here is what it is, how it fits, and how it stacks up against the models you already know.
What is the adidas Stadt?
It is a low-profile lifestyle sneaker with a leather or suede upper depending on the colorway, adidas branding worked into the side panels, and Stadt lettering on the lateral side. Underneath, an EVA midsole handles cushioning, and most colorways sit on a gum sole.
One thing worth correcting, because it gets repeated a lot. The Stadt is not a reissue of a vintage adidas shoe. It arrived in 2019 as a new design that borrows from the archive rather than reproducing it, taking cues from the adidas London for the upper and the adidas Tobacco for the low-profile sole unit. Stadt is the German word for city, which is a nod to the 1970s and 1980s City Series shoes named after Berlin, Munich, Amsterdam and the rest. It is a wink at that lineage rather than a member of it. There was no historical Stadt.
The version we carry is the Brown/Carbon/Gum Stadt, JQ9012, listed by adidas as Bliss, Carbon and Gum, alongside the Navy Sky JQ9008 in suede.
Do the adidas Stadt run big?
Start with your usual size. adidas lists the Stadt as a regular fit and its own size guidance says to order your normal size, and that is the most authoritative answer available.
You will find people saying it runs large and recommending half a size down. We have gone looking for the basis of that, and it is thinner than it appears. There is no lab review of the Stadt, no aggregated fit data on the major resale platforms, and adidas's own guidance points the other way. So treat the size-down advice as something to be aware of rather than a rule to follow blindly. If you are between sizes or you like a snug fit, half down is a reasonable lean. If you are ordering without trying on and you have no strong preference, your usual size is the safer bet.

adidas Stadt vs Samba
People ask this one a lot, so here is the honest comparison.
The Samba came out of indoor football in 1950 and has the T-toe overlay, the suede or leather upper, and the thin gum sole that made it what it is. It fits true to size and runs narrow, and it is the most recognizable shoe in the category right now, which is either the point or the problem depending on what you want.
The Stadt is less common on the street and sits on its own construction. If you have tried a Samba and found it too tight across the forefoot, the Stadt is worth a look. If you want the shoe everyone recognizes, the Samba is still that shoe. Our Samba versions explainer covers the OG, XLG and ADV builds if that is the direction you are leaning, and Samba sizing confirms the true-to-size read.
If you are weighing the Stadt against the bigger seller in the terrace family, we put it head to head with the Handball Spezial in Stadt vs Handball Spezial.
The Brown, Carbon and Gum colorway
Brown has quietly become the most useful non-neutral in sneakers, and this colorway is a good example of why. The Bliss brown upper sits warm rather than orange, Carbon handles the darker panels, and the gum sole ties the whole thing to the terrace lineage. Gum soles also age well, since they pick up wear as a patina instead of showing it as damage the way a white sole does.
It works naturally with straight-leg denim, olive trousers, or relaxed black pants. Brown and olive together is an easy win that a lot of people skip because they assume brown needs to match something.
Where the Stadt fits in the adidas archive
adidas has been steadily reissuing shapes from its back catalog, and the Stadt belongs to the wave of low-profile models that arrived alongside that revival. If you want the full map of that archive, our guide to old school adidas models covers the founding year and original sport behind each one, and adidas lifestyle shoes ranks the terrace icons worth owning.
The wider selection is in the adidas Originals collection, and the men's casual sneakers collection covers the category across brands.
Buying a real pair
Lower-profile adidas models get counterfeited constantly because the construction looks simple enough to copy, and the details that separate a real pair from a fake tend to be in the stitching density, the shape of the toe box, and the quality of the branding. Every pair we sell is inspected in-house before it ships. If you want to know what to look for yourself, how to spot fake adidas walks through the checks.
Every pair is authentic, authenticated in-house, and shipped the next business day from Portland, Oregon. Verified & Shipped.
