adidas Stadt vs Handball Spezial: Which Terrace Shoe Should You Buy?

Both are low, flat, gum-soled adidas shoes that sit in the same part of a wardrobe. Put them next to each other and the family resemblance is obvious. The histories behind them are completely different, though, and so is the way they fit. If you are choosing between the two, the decision comes down to your foot more than your taste.

The Handball Spezial is the real archive shoe

The Spezial arrived in 1979, built for elite indoor handball. Everything about it was a performance decision at the time. The gum outsole was there for grip on an indoor court. The low, flat profile kept players close to the floor for lateral movement. The T-toe construction reinforced the part of the shoe that took the most abuse.

It outlived the sport it was made for and became one of the most recognizable terrace silhouettes adidas has. The version we carry most is the Black and White Handball Spezial, DB3021, a black cow suede upper with white leather 3-Stripes, gold Spezial branding along the sidewall, and the gum sole.

The Stadt is not an archive shoe, and that surprises people

This is the part that usually gets reported wrong, so it is worth being precise.

The Stadt arrived in 2019. It is a new design that borrows from the archive rather than reproducing anything from it. The upper takes cues from the adidas London and the low-profile sole unit echoes the adidas Tobacco. The name is the German word for city, which nods to the City Series of the 1970s and 1980s, the run of shoes named after Berlin, Munich, Amsterdam and others. The Stadt is a wink at that lineage rather than a member of it, and there was never a vintage Stadt to reissue.

That is not a knock on the shoe. It means the Stadt was designed from the start for how people dress now, rather than adapted from a sport shoe. The Brown, Carbon and Gum Stadt, JQ9012 is the anchor colorway, with a leather and synthetic upper over an EVA midsole and a gum outsole. The Navy Sky JQ9008 runs a suede upper instead.

How they fit, and this is the real decision

The Handball Spezial has the roomiest fit of the classic terrace models. Wide feet do genuinely better in a Spezial than in a Samba, a Gazelle, or a Superstar, and that reputation is earned rather than marketing. It runs true to size. Our Handball Spezial sizing guide has the size-by-size detail.

The Stadt is the harder one to give advice on, and we would rather say that than pretend otherwise. adidas lists it as a regular fit and tells you to order your usual size. You will also find people saying it runs large and recommending half a size down. There is no lab review of the Stadt and no aggregated fit data on the major platforms, so that size-down claim is worth knowing about without treating it as settled. Start at your usual size unless you already know you like a snug fit.

Put simply: if your feet are wide, the Spezial is the safer purchase, because its roominess is well established and the Stadt's fit is not.

What they feel like underfoot

The Spezial was built for an indoor court, so it carries a cushioned midsole and an OrthoLite sockliner under a suede upper. It feels comfortable from the first wear rather than needing a break-in.

The Stadt sits on an EVA midsole with a thin, low-profile sole unit. It reads flatter and closer to the ground. If you like the sensation of a shoe that disappears underfoot, that is the appeal. If you want a little more cushioning for a day on your feet, the Spezial gives you more.

Which one gets worn more?

Honest answer: the Spezial, by a wide margin, and not only because it is the better shoe for more people. It is the one with cultural momentum right now. The Stadt is the quieter pick, and it has stayed quiet since 2019 with no collaborations and very little attention.

That cuts both ways. If you want a terrace shoe that does not announce which one it is, the Stadt is genuinely uncommon in a way the Spezial stopped being a couple of years ago. If you want the shoe with the story and the recognition, that is the Spezial.

So which should you buy?

Take the Handball Spezial if you have wide feet, if you want the shoe with the real 1979 history, if you want more cushioning, or if you want the recognizable one.

Take the Stadt if you already own a Spezial or a Samba and want something in the same register that nobody else is wearing, if you prefer a flatter and lower ride, or if the brown and gum palette is what you have been after.
