Samba vs Gazelle vs Spezial: the quick answer
If you want the icon and a sleek, structured shoe, get the Samba. Just know it's the narrowest, and most people size down half. If you want a slightly softer, rounder retro look, get the Gazelle. If you want the most comfortable, widest, most forgiving fit, especially for wider feet, get the Spezial.
What's the difference between the Samba, Gazelle and Spezial?
- Samba: started as an indoor soccer training shoe around 1949 to 1950. A leather upper with a suede T-toe, serrated 3-Stripes and a thin gum sole make it the sharpest and most structured of the three.
- Gazelle: in the adidas line since 1966, starting as a training shoe before it moved to the terraces. It's slim and suede-led, with a rounder toe and a more casual feel.
- Spezial: launched in 1979 as an indoor handball shoe. It's built low to the ground with a soft suede upper, a grippy gum sole and a T-toe overlay.

Fit and sizing, narrowest to roomiest
This is what really separates them. From narrowest to roomiest: Samba, then Gazelle, then Spezial.
- Samba: narrow and slightly long. Standard and narrow feet size down half; wider feet stay true to size. Nobody should size up. See our Samba sizing guide.

Samba vs Gazelle
This is the closest call of the three. The Samba is narrower, stiffer and more structured, with a thinner sole. The Gazelle feels softer and roomier from the first wear. Pick the Samba if you like a sharp, polished shoe that holds its shape with trousers and straight-leg denim. Pick the Gazelle if you want an easier, more relaxed suede shoe that doesn't need the half-size-down treatment.
Samba vs Spezial
These two sit at opposite ends of the fit range. The Samba is the narrowest of the terrace shoes; the Spezial is the roomiest, with a more generous forefoot and a less rigid feel out of the box. Both are suede-led and softer than a Samba, so the choice comes down to shape. The Spezial sits lower and fits roomier, while the Gazelle is slimmer through the foot. Which is most comfortable, and which is best for wide feet?
The Spezial wins both, by a clear margin. The wider last, thinner tongue and softer collar make it the easiest to wear out of the box, and it's the widest-fitting of the trio. All three have flat, minimal cushioning because they're terrace shoes built low to the ground, so none is ideal for all-day standing. The Samba is the one wide feet struggle with most, and the Gazelle is a workable middle ground.
So which should you buy?
Buy the Samba if you want the icon and a structured, polished leather shoe, and you have standard-to-narrow feet (or you're happy to size down). Buy the Gazelle if you prefer a softer, rounder suede look. Buy the Spezial if comfort and width matter most, or Sambas have ever felt too narrow.
